The Langtang Trek is one of Nepal’s most accessible and rewarding Himalayan journeys. Often referred to as the “Valley of Glaciers,” Langtang lies just north of Kathmandu and offers jaw-dropping mountain scenery, rich Tamang culture, and peaceful trails that remain less crowded than Annapurna or Everest.

Langtang Trek

Beginning in Syabrubesi, the trail winds through bamboo forests, yak pastures, and traditional villages like Lama Hotel and Langtang Village—rebuilt after the 2015 earthquake. The trek culminates in the sacred alpine valley of Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m), where you can hike to Kyanjin Ri for panoramic views of Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, and surrounding peaks.

This trek is perfect for those seeking a quieter, culturally immersive Himalayan adventure without domestic flights or extreme altitudes.

🛏️ Accommodation

  • During the trek: 8 nights in traditional teahouses run by local families. Rooms are basic but cozy, usually twin-sharing with shared bathrooms.
  • Higher up (e.g. Kyanjin Gompa), facilities are more rustic, but the warm hospitality and mountain views more than make up for it.
  • Blankets are available, but we recommend bringing a -10°C sleeping bag for comfort.

🍛 Food on the Trek

  • Three meals a day are provided during the trek:
    • Breakfast: Tibetan bread, porridge, eggs, pancakes, or toast
    • Lunch & Dinner: Dal Bhat (rice, lentils, vegetables), fried rice, noodles, pasta, soups, or momos
  • Fresh produce becomes limited with altitude, but meals are nutritious, energy-rich, and prepared with care.
  • Vegetarian and vegan options are widely available—please inform your guide of any dietary needs in advance.
  • Meals in Kathmandu are included only on Day 1 (Welcome Dinner) and Day 9 (Farewell Dinner). All others are at your discretion.

🚙 Transportation & Trail Access

  • The Langtang Trek starts and ends in Syabrubesi, which is accessible by private jeep (7–8 hours) from Kathmandu.
  • The trail itself is well-established and passes through forests, villages, yak pastures, and alpine terrain.
  • No domestic flights are needed—making this a smoother and more eco-friendly trekking experience compared to remote regions.

🚰 Drinking Water

  • Safe drinking water is essential. Options include:
    • Boiled water (available at teahouses for a small fee)
    • Filtered water (available at some stops)
    • Purification tablets or SteriPen (recommended to bring your own)
  • We strongly discourage buying plastic bottles on the trail—bring two refillable bottles or a hydration bladder.

🩺 Health & Safety

  • Our experienced guides are trained in basic first aid and high-altitude response.
  • A group medical kit is carried at all times.
  • If needed, we can coordinate emergency evacuation via helicopter (must be covered by your travel insurance).
  • We maintain a slow, steady pace with built-in acclimatization time for safe altitude gain.

🧠 Altitude Sickness Awareness

  • The trek ascends gradually, with one full acclimatization day in Kyanjin Gompa.
  • Common symptoms (headache, dizziness, nausea) can be managed if caught early.
  • Your guide will monitor your health daily. In case of severe symptoms, descent is mandatory.
  • To stay safe:
    • Drink 3–4 liters of water daily
    • Avoid alcohol and caffeine
    • Communicate symptoms early
    • Rest properly and don’t rush the trek

🛂 Visa Information for Nepal

  • Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport.
  • Fees as of 2025:
    • 15 days: USD $30
    • 30 days: USD $50
  • Required:
    • Valid passport (6+ months validity)
    • One passport-sized photo (can be digital at the airport kiosks)
    • Payment in cash (USD preferred) or credit card

You can also apply online via Nepal’s Department of Immigration website prior to arrival for faster processing.

💵 Money & Tipping

There are no ATMs or card payment options along the Langtang Trek, so it’s essential to carry enough Nepali Rupees (NPR) from Kathmandu. We recommend budgeting NPR 2,500–3,500 (around USD $20–30) per day for extras like snacks, WiFi, hot showers, or charging. Currency exchange is best done in Thamel for favorable rates. Tipping is a well-respected tradition in Nepal, and while not mandatory, it’s a meaningful way to thank your support team. We suggest USD $6–8 per day for your guide and $4–6 per day for each porter (shared between two trekkers), typically given in cash at the end of the trek.
